UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) Certificate: An Overview

The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new product conformity mark introduced on January 1, 2021, for certain products placed on the market in the United Kingdom (England, Wales, and Scotland). As a result of Brexit, it was designed to replace the CE marking and signifies that a product complies with all applicable legal regulations and safety requirements in the UK.

Difference Between the UKCA Marking and UKCA Certificate

• UKCA Marking: A visual conformity indicator affixed to the product, its packaging, or accompanying documentation.

• UKCA Certificate: While not an officially separate document, this term is often used to refer to the Declaration of Conformity and technical documentation. It signifies that the manufacturer declares compliance with relevant UK regulations and provides supporting technical documentation.
  
  

Which Products Require the UKCA Marking?

Many product groups that previously required the CE marking now require the UKCA marking. Some of these product categories include:

How to Obtain the UKCA Marking?

The process of obtaining the UKCA marking depends on the product type and applicable legal regulations. The general steps are as follows:

1. Identifying Relevant Legal Regulations

Determine which UK regulations apply to the product.

2. Selecting the Appropriate Conformity Assessment Procedure

Choose the conformity assessment procedure specified in the relevant regulation. This process varies based on the product’s risk level and may range from self-declaration by the manufacturer to mandatory involvement of a UK Approved Body.

3. Preparing the Technical Documentation

Compile a technical file that includes the product’s specifications, design, manufacturing process, and conformity assessment results.

4. Conducting the Conformity Assessment

Ensure the product meets the relevant regulatory requirements through testing, analysis, and evaluations.

5. Preparing the Declaration of Conformity

Draft a document in which the manufacturer declares that the product complies with the applicable regulations.

6. Affixing the UKCA Marking

Once all requirements are met, affix the UKCA marking visibly, legibly, and indelibly on the product, its packaging, or accompanying documentation.

UK Approved Body

For certain product categories, the conformity assessment process must involve a UK Approved Body, which is an independent organization designated by the UK government to assess and certify compliance with relevant regulations.
