COSMETIC ACCELERATED STABILITY TESTING
Cosmetic Accelerated Stability Testing is a test performed to determine the stability of a product over time. This is done to determine the product's shelf life and to ensure that it remains safe and effective during use, storage, and transportation.
Accelerated stability tests are carried out in controlled environments that simulate the conditions that products would normally encounter, but these conditions are intensified and accelerated. This allows the assessment of the product's stability over a long period in a short period.
The main purposes of accelerated stability testing for cosmetic products are:
To Estimate Shelf Life: To help determine how long the product will remain acceptable, maintaining its functional, aesthetic, and safety properties.
To Evaluate Formulation Stability: To understand how well the product maintains its physical and chemical properties (color, odor, pH, viscosity, etc.) under different temperature, humidity, and light conditions.
To Determine Packaging Compatibility: To assess how the interaction of the product with the packaging material affects its stability and safety.
To Identify Degradation Mechanisms: To understand the ways in which the product degrades over time and the possible degradation products.
To Determine Storage Conditions: To determine the appropriate storage conditions (temperature, light, humidity) necessary to maintain the product's stability.
Accelerated stability tests generally include the following parameters:
Temperature: Products are stored at elevated temperatures (e.g., 25°C, 30°C, 40°C, or 50°C). This simulates the effect of temperature variations that the product may encounter during its shelf life.
Humidity: Products can be stored at high humidity levels (e.g., 60% RH, 75% RH). This assesses how the product will react when exposed to different climatic conditions.
Light: Products can be exposed to UV light or visible light. This evaluates the effect of light on the product's stability.
Cycling Test (Temperature and/or Humidity): Products are subjected to cycles between different temperature and/or humidity levels. This simulates the effect of sudden temperature and humidity changes that the product may encounter during transportation and storage.
Mechanical Stress: Factors like shaking and vibration can also be used to simulate conditions during transportation.

est Duration:
Accelerated stability tests can typically last from a few weeks to several months (e.g., 3, 6, or 12 months). The duration depends on the type of product, the predicted shelf life, and the specific test conditions used.
Parameters Tested:
Throughout the test period, the product is evaluated at regular intervals (e.g., initially, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months) for the following parameters:
Physical Properties: Appearance (color, odor, phase separation), viscosity, texture, pH.
Chemical Properties: Active ingredient content, preservative efficacy, formation of degradation products.
Microbiological Properties: Level of microbial contamination.
Performance Tests: SPF value in sunscreens, moisturizing effect in moisturizers.
